The site was developed by 1880 with a small industrial building, one of twelve manufactories on land leased by the Ousatonic Water Co. with water power supplied by the company. By 1896, two buildings were located at the site: the southwestern four-story building was occupied by Birmingham Corset Co, and the northeastern three-story building by Derby Plane Co. Robert N. Bassett Company manufactured dress stays, corset steels and wires here from c.1901 to c.1923. The company changed names in 1923 to Bassett Metal Goods Co., having expanded product line to brass, steel and wire specialties.
