1917-21
From Olmsted Historic Resource Inventory form (Red Bridge Group, 2021): Subdivision plans were prepared by the Olmsted Brothers in 1917 through the early 1920s to provide housing for factory workers at Stanley Works, a company in New Britain involved in the design and manufacture of hardware established in 1852. The Andrews Subdivision plans prepared by Olmsted Brothers Landscape Architects for property of the Stanley Works extends south and west from Broad and Burritt Streets and north from Myrtle Street. The plans indicate a series of four curving generally parallel roads and two connector roads establishing numerous lots within seven blocks all surrounding a central playground area. It is not clear whether the subdivision was ever developed. A portion of one of the streets indicated on the Olmsted plans–Armistice Street–is extant today, and two residences along the street that may have been built based on the plans. Other houses appear on a 1934 aerial photograph that may also have been part of the subdivision. The area has since been extensively developed with low income housing, resulting in the loss of additional evidence of implementation of the Olmsted subdivision plans.
