The district highlights the significance of the Colt Patent Firearms Mfg. Co. (#3436) and includes both the factory complex; Colt Park; Colt’s mansion, Armsmear; and several clusters of company-owned housing. The latter include ten multi-family red brick residences built along Huyshope and Van Block Avenues ca. 1855, and nine single-family wood-frame houses erected on Curcombe Street ca. 1860. The Huyshope Avenue residences share an identical Gothic Revival design, while those on Van Block Avenue are of a uniform Italianate styling. Those on Curocombe Street were known as the ‘Potsdam Village,’ as they housed skilled workers that Colt persuaded to emigrate from Potsdam, Germany. Potsdam Village is comprised of nearly identical Swiss Chalet style residences. For additional description see National Register application: http://pdfhost.focus.nps.gov/docs/NRHP/Text/76001987.pdf.
