    Brief Description

The district highlights the significance of a number of Hartford’s most important industrial firms, among them being the Weed Sewing Machine Co. Weed was bought out by the Pope Mfg. Co. in 1890, and much of the sewing machine factory has since been lost, however, portions remain at the rear (north side) of the former Pope Mfg. Co. plant at 440-450 Capitol Avenue. In 1888, the Weed Sewing Machine Co. commissioned the notable Hartford architect George Keller to design two rowhouses on property the company owned south of the plant along what would become Columbia Street. The architect subsequently designed two 12-unit red brick rowhouses with varied facades bearing a blend of Gothic Revival and Queen Anne styling but with nearly identical interior layouts. These were so popular that the company hired Keller to design another rowhouse along the east side of Park Terrace (located a block to the west) in 1895. All are intact and contribute to the historic district. For additional description see National Register application: http://pdfhost.focus.nps.gov/docs/NRHP/Text/79002635.pdf.
