Consists of a substantial yet compact village of single- and multi-family residences located west of several large mills and mill sites lining the west bank of the Shetucket River (the extant mills consist of those formerly occupied by the Uncas Paper Co. #3223 and the Shetucket Co. #3219). The mill sites and associated village were originally laid out by the Norwich industrialist William P. Greene in 1833, although the vast majority of the housing in the district was built by developers not directly associated with Greene or the mills. A limited number of single- and multi-family residences were erected by the Shetucket Co. between 1850 and 1870, however, and these can be found at the southern end of the district along Central Avenue and 2nd and 3rd Streets.
