    Brief Description

Consists of a small village of single- and multi-family residences located in the vicinity of the former site of King Woolen Co. mill. The mill was erected by Amos King ca. 1865 and much of the neighboring housing stock was built by his company. An 1868 map of the area identifies some 18 houses belonging to the mill, these located along what are now Main Street, Riverside Drive, Versailles Road, and McNeely Road. A number of these have been identified as extant, including two houses on Main Street (one being the Amos King House), three houses on Bay Street, and one house on McNeely Road. Many of the houses on Riverside Drive have been lost and since intermixed with later structures, thus requiring more detailed investigation in order to determine which were built by King and which might have been associated with the mill at a later date. Two additional residences located along Bay Street and four along Versailles Road were likely also associated with the mill and they are of two replicate designs, one a one-and-a-half-story side-gabled duplex, and the other a two-story four-family structure. The village’s store and post office also still stands, this being a two-story stone structure that stands along the north side of Main Street a short distance south of the mill site.
