Known as Lordship Village, this development was built as worker housing during the First World War by the United States Government under the auspices of the United States Housing Corporation and in collaboration with the Bridgeport Housing Company. The Stratford site was largely chosen due to its proximity to the trolley line, which gave residents easy access to industrial plants in neighboring Bridgeport. The development includes some 17 wood-frame and red brick detached and semi-detached one-and-a-half-story residences, which are of several standardized Colonial and Tudor Revival designs created by architect R. Clipson Sturgis, associate architect. After the war’s conclusion on November 11, 1918, the United States Housing Corporation sold Lordship Village and its 82 other housing developments in 26 states to individual homeowners and housing associations.
