The Embie Manufacturing Company was organized in Portland, Connecticut in 1924. The firm was established and led by Frank E. Magnuson, who was formerly associated with the Omo Manufacturing Company of Middletown, Connecticut. The Embie Manufacturing Company produced novelties and initially occupied a small shop on Marlborough Street in Portland. By 1927, however, the firm had moved to a space at the foot of Freestone Avenue in Portland and the Marlborough plant had been occupied and expanded by the Connecticut State Highway Department. The Embie Manufacturing Company closed its doors just a year later and Magnuson subsequently took at job at the Russell Manufacturing Company across the river in Middletown.

The former Embie Manufacturing Company plant consists of two adjoining primary blocks located on the north side of Marlborough Street, roughly 125’ east of Marlborough Street’s intersection with Pickering Street. The oldest portion of the plant fronts on Marlborough Street and was erected ca. 1924 for the Embie Manufacturing Company. The building is a one-story, 30’ x 50’ red brick block with a rough-cut brownstone foundation, segmental-arched window openings with red brick sills and six-over-six double-hung sash, a molded concrete cornice, red brick parapet with concrete coping, and a flat roof. The primary entrance to the building is centered on the south elevation and is accessed via a set of concrete stairs flanked by red brick half-walls with concrete coping. The entry door is set in a rectangular opening with a plain surround. The wood door has a large light in its upper half. A two-story, 50’ x 60’ red brick addition was erected adjoining the original block’s north elevation ca. 1927. The details of the addition are identical to the ca. 1924 block except for the fact that is has a concrete rather than brownstone foundation. There are two pass-through door openings on the block’s south elevation, each set in a rectangular opening with a plain surround.
Fair
The plant is in fair condition. The exterior walls are in need of some repointing, however, the original windows have been preserved and both blocks are well maintained and structurally sound.
