Hiram Pulver was born in Copake NY in 1824, and learned the trade of carriage maker. He moved to Torrington c. 1848 where he worked for the Alvord Carriage Co. After a couple of years in California for the gold rush, Pulver returned to Torrington and started his own business, originally located on Hodges Hill Road. The carriage shop was relocated to Pulver Street in 1877, where the business was carried on by the family until 1944. City directories list company activities as carriage manufacturers, dealers and painters, and starting in 1930, auto painters and furniture refinishers.
