The Heim Company was established in 1932 by Lewis Heim and his son Charles R. to manufacture a rod end bearing invented by Lewis. It was the first integral rod end bearing and was used in control applications for airplane rudders, elevators and others. Production started at a factory on Sanford Street. The company's rod end bearings were used in WWII military aircraft and vehicles, and after the war the product was marketed and used for textile manufacturing, machine tool makers, construction machinery, snowmobiles, etc. By 1962, the firm had built an 80,000 square foot air conditioned factory on Round Hill Road (then number 78, now number 60). In 1969, Heim sponsored the first of several award programs for high school student designs. When Charle R Heim retired, the firm was headed by Albert McCloskey, who had worked there for 22 years as Vice President and General Manager. Under McCloskey, the firm had a grounds beautification program to create a pleasant landscape buffer for the residential neighbors, although to accomplish this the firm bought two abutting properties and demolished the two homes on them. In 1972 the Bridgeport Manufacturing Association awarded their Jobmakers award for the creation of the Unilin linear bearing which brought new jobs to the community. During the 1970s some 300 employees worked at Heim. In 1993 the firm was bought by the Roller Bearing Company, which still operates at the site.
