Historic Archaeological Sites inventory 11/2022: "This mill site is one of the few remaining in the state with relative integrity. The earliest date currently for the site is 1850 from an industrial census attributing ownership of the mill to Lenard Parmelee but from anecdotal evidence some sort of mill has been on on site since the 18th century. In 1903/4 (further research needed) the mill was bought by Johann Kaplan, an immigrant from Mistek, Czechoslovakia. The Kaplan family would go on to pursue artistic careers, but while they were at the mill site the second oldest son of Johann, Ladislav Kaplan, would invent and produce violin strings. He is credited with bringing electricity to the mill in 1905 - the earliest property in Killingworth to have electrical power. Kaplan strings are still in production today. The ground is rich in archaeological deposits which may contain evidence of Ladislav's work along with information about the grist and cider production that took place on site."
