According to an article in The Hour, April 1, 1986, the building was built for the manufacture of hats, and was powered by two steam boilers which ran engines that powered 200 feet of shafting. Hat makers operated at the site for 50-60 years, after which it was used by toy manufacturers. It was renovated in 1986 by Beinfield, Leht and Wagner of South Norwalk as a publishing center for Business Journals Inc.
