Historic Narrative

The first Rogers paper mill was established in Manchester in 1832. After the death of owner Peter Roger in 1841, his son took over and the operation became the Rogers Paper Manufacturing Company. Henry Roger developed several new industrial paper-making processes, including a method for bleaching paper and recycling waste paper. The firm primarily produced paperboard for textile loom punch cards. After 1900, it developed insulated paperboard for the emerging electrical market, and this location was the finishing mill. In 1925, the company expanded and bought a paper mill in North Manchester which had belonged to A. W. Case. Still in business today in Killingly, it makes components and materials for the plastics industry, including computers and other electronic equipment, automotive materials, gaskets and electrical insulation, in 14 manufacturing plants in 5 states and 3 foreign countries. From at least 1949 to 1955, the mill served as a warehouse for Adler Dobkin,m a cigar-wrap tobacco firm.

Architectural Description

The mill was built in three major sections. The earliest section runs parallel to Prospect street, and is a wood framed, wood sheathed building with slate mansard roof built in the late 1860s after a fire had destroyed the original mill. To the north is the second section constructed c.1890-1910: the eastern portion is a two-story brick building with a flat roof, the western section is a one-story brick office building with a flat roof and a wooden portico supported by columns. In the rear of these buildings is a post 1949 addition not visible from the street.
