Historic Narrative

The mill was built c.1840 by Oliver Lay. It was initially a fuller's mill, and around 1858 it was used by John Bradbury to manufacture cassimeres and satinets. Bradbury had begun the manufacture of cassimeres in Winsted in the 1840s, moving to Chester in 1852 before moving to Old Lyme.
