This was the site of the first factory for M. Heminway and Sons Silk Co., started in the 1840s to produce spooled sewing silk. Steele Brook was also dammed at that time to create Heminway Pond, the mill pond. In 1912, Heminway built a new factory across the street on the south side of Echo Lake Road, moving operations there. By the 1950s, the factory site was occupied by Watertown Manufacturing Company, which made Bakelite and plastic products under the tradenames Lifetime and Watertown Ware.
