Site was first developed in 1853 by Windsor Knitting and Manufacturing Co.; the business became Sequassen Woolen Co. c.1855 and continued to manufacture wool and cotton goods. The original building was destroyed by fire in 1873, and rebuilt. Spencer Arms Co. occupied the site from 1883 to c.1885; it manufactured repeating firearms. Eddy Electric Co. manufactured electric motors and generators from 1885 to 1902 when GE bought the company; they continued to make small electric motors. Pierre Lorrilard Co. used the building to sort and warehouse tobacco for its cigarette operations from 1927 to 1951.
